Internal Medicine

Internal medicine is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of internal diseases and their prevention if possible.  Internal diseases are those that affect the various internal organs and generally do not require surgical intervention.  The internist is often the physician who is most capable of assessing most abnormal symptoms and can direct the patient to the next steps in diagnosis and treatment or refer them to other specialties as needed.

The following are some of the most important health needs handled by the internist:

  • Cardiovascular diseases including hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, etc.
  • Liver diseases such as the various types of hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, fatty liver, liver failure, etc.
  • Endocrine disorders including diabetes, thyroid disorders and others.
  • Gastrointestinal diseases such as gastroenteritis, acid reflux, peptic ulcers, irritable bowel disease, colitis and others.
  • Respiratory disorders such as bronchial asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, etc.
